Will Learning How To Detox Your Body Boost Your Natural Defenses

I’ve been fortunate enough to enjoy good health for pretty much all my life. I very rarely got ill, and can’t remember the last time I had a cold or virus of any kind – or at least not that lasted longer than about 12 hours. So it was quite alarming when I realized I was becoming very lethargic and out of energy, and I was even finding it hard to get up in the morning. I’d visited the doctor several times and had quite a few blood tests, but every one showed nothing wrong.

I was visiting a chiropractor one day for an old “war wound”, and she advised me that I was in need of a natural detox, and take some time to learn how to detox your body and eliminate the build up of toxins in my body. I didn’t know the first thing about detoxing, so figured it was a worthy investment of my time to at least check it out, and try to understand why alternative health therapists say it’s so popular and advocate detox diets and recommend starting with the 7 day detox diet so strongly.

She also hinted to me to try a relaxing foot detox. I now treat myself to a foot massage at least once a week, but if you don’t have one of those, the detox foot patch can be just as good – but doing it this way you miss out on the relaxing foot massage at the same time

So here’s my top tips about how to detox your body.

Herbal teas are just as good as water

One of the most important things you need to is drink lots of water while you are following a detox diet because the water will help your body excrete toxins from your system. Drinking plenty of water also has other health benefits like promoting regular bowel movements, helps your internal organs function more efficiently, and encourage clear skin. Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water each day (about 2 liters), but increase that when the weather is hot.

As a guideline, increase your water intake by about half a liter for each hour of exercise. The healthiest type of water is filtered tap water. Ideally drink water that is at room temperature. If the thought of drinking that much water is overbearing, try herbal teas as well – loose leaf is better than tea bags as it hasn’t been processed as much. Peppermint, camomile, dandelion root, horsetail and yarrow are especially great in a detox as their essential oils assist in the detox process. Green tea and redbush has other health benefits too as it is a rich source of natural antioxidants.

Choose Organic Food Where Possible

You do not need to switch to a totally organic diet on a detox diet, especially as the cost can be very high, but if you can manage one or two organic foods that would be great.

Don’t panic if you can’t find organic foods in your area. Concentrating on eating fresh (and ideally raw) fruit and veg is the main point – even if they are non-organic – instead of eating too few of them. Having said that, there are some very beneficial health reasons of concentrating on organic food on a healthy detox diet.

The use of artificial chemicals, pesticides and fertilizers are not allowed when growing organic foods, and therefore they are much healthier being free from toxins and man made chemicals. Organic farming is a hotly debated and controversial topic because there is evidence that the ‘cocktail’ effect of toxins from man made chemicals and bug sprays may be related to a lot of the serious health issues we face today.

Organic foods are subject to a lot less processing. Ultimately this means organic foods not genetically modified and are free from hydrogenated fats and artificial additives. Certain organic foods taste better and have more flavor.
